From 240 GLT to 740, these are TG readers’ favourite Volvo saloons
Yep, the 850R does feature. Shocking, we know
You lot are clearly clued-up about yer Swedish boxes, because this week’s question asked which Volvo saloon was your favourite, and the answers have been fascinating to browse through.
Let’s start with the most upvoted comment, submitted by Flash57: “The S60 Polestar with the T6 motor. Not only did it come out of the box and ready to go, but it reignited the Volvo performance spark that had been missing for a long time. I’m lucky enough to own one, and I’ve successfully competed in many tarmac rally events on the standard drivetrain with small tyre and brake upgrades."
Here's BikeSausage: “It has to be the 760 V6 for me. Volvos aren’t really about sportiness, bling or driving dynamics. I speak as a V90 Cross Country owner who doesn’t have undignified sport modes or shift paddles.”
Jsf2905 said: “Got to love the 240 GLT. I bought mine brand-new back in the Spring of 1988 - it was Carbon Grey with sand leather interior. No air con, but there was a manual sunroof and weird little flaps in the footwell to let air in. I loved that car so much and kept it for over 10 years. I did big miles, and it never went wrong on me. OK, I’ll go and polish my rose-tinted specs.”
Don’t you just love a personal story? Here’s another from Teabag Towers: “My grandfather had a 740. I always wondered why he didn’t get a newer Volvo, and he eventually did get a V60. But then I realised the reason he kept the 740 around for so long was because you couldn’t kill it. That thing was built like a tank.”
Our penultimate mention is for Lucas Weidner, who said: “I love the look and sound of the 850R. There’s one just down the road from me, and I get to watch it fly past every morning. It looks innocent in certain colours, but that inline-five is glorious. I can always appreciate some Swedish engineering.”
Finishing up this week’s roundup is Doctor Jones, who hilariously said: “The 244. It’s the perfect Eighties dad-mobile and looks like it was built in Minecraft.”
