Photo of the day: McLaren's spotlessly clean production line

Supercar maker announces record sales and 250 new recuits. Here's where they'll work

Published: 07 Jan 2016

Car registrations in 2015 were strong. As strong as they have ever been, in fact. But rather than walk you through a spreadsheet of dizzying numbers, we’re going to focus on McLaren.

The British supercar maker had its own record year, selling 1,654 cars to 30 different countries.

Its range also swelled considerably in 2015, gaining the madcap P1 GTR, the sublime 675LT and its most everyday-friendly model, the 570S.

The latter - the first model in McLaren’s more accessible ‘Sports Series’ - has helped catalyse such demand that 250 new staff are being taken on, 200 of which will be in production. Overall, McLaren’s headcount is rising by 40 per cent.

A second shift is being set up at the factory in Woking, which will lift production from 14 to 20 cars a day. It’s not a number to trouble the mind-boggling stats of Britain’s most productive car factory - Nissan’s Sunderland plant - of course.

But then Nissan's products are a touch less exclusive, and its gaff is nowhere near as clean or beautiful as McLaren’s, which you can see in the picture above. Let’s hope all those new recruits know how to keep their shoes clean…
