Porsche's updated 911 GT3: hit or miss?
Glad that Porsche has got a 500bhp performance car through regs, or are a few tweaks not enough?
Tom Ford: “Porsche delivers what we’ve all been asking for”
You want boring magic? You have it here. Not that the GT3 is in any way boring, but to get a 500bhp naturally aspirated petrol engine through the new emissions regs is nothing short of Gandalf-level tuning wizardry. Which means we get to enjoy a manual or PDK GT3 in secret service (Touring) or carnival (Track) spec for another few years.
The gains might feel marginal, but when you realise that the fist of regulation is closing fast on these cars, a GT3 that’s better than the last one is, frankly, amazing. And Porsche has delivered exactly what we’ve all been asking for.
It’s the same recipe, but when it tastes this good, you don’t burn the cookbook.
Ollie Kew: “Was it simply time to facelift it according to marketing?”
Leaving aside all the “you can’t buy one unless you promise to sweep the floors in the nearest Porsche dealership and name them the beneficiary of your will” cynicism... is the new GT3 actually new enough, or was it simply time to facelift it according to marketing?
For £30,000 more than the 992.1 GT3 cost originally, you get a couple of suspension bits off the GT3 RS, a smidge less torque and the shorter final drive we’ve been insisting upon for about a decade. It doesn’t feel like a lot. And then there’s the cheek of asking another £30k for the Touring’s lightweight package.
Sorry, I’m buying a GT3 – the lightweight, track day 911!
