McLaren names its 'baby' supercar 570S

Gagging to see McLaren's new 'entry-level' sports car? You'll be relieved to know it's now just a week away. You may also be happy to know it finally has a name. The first car in the company's Sports Series range will be the 570S Coupe.

Not a nameplate dripping in glamour, perhaps, but it does place it rather neatly in its place in the McLaren hierarchy. As with the 650S, the numerical part of its name denotes power. And with 570PS - or 562bhp in British speak - the British sports car sits a handy 10bhp healthier than the Porsche 911 Turbo S it's likely to get feistiest with.

Dubbed "the first Sports Series" derivative, there'll be more iterations on their way, a folding hard-top 570S convertible most probably next. And while it may be the baby of the McLaren range, we're promised shared DNA with the Super Series (the 650S range) and the Ultimate Series (the P1 and quite beastly P1 GTR).

That means a carbonfibre chassis structure and a twin-turbocharged V8 engine. It also means just the two seats (no barely useable token back seats here). Expect the engine to be hooked up to a seven-speed paddleshift gearbox and some fancy knobs to twiddle to adjust the chassis and drivetrain to suit how seriously you take your driving.

The superb driving position, wonderful visibility and general ease of use of McLaren's other cars ought to be a given, too.

And this is our first glimpse of an undisguised production car, albeit one severely cropped in on the buttress betwixt the cabin and the mid-mounted engine.

This mildly frustrating photo tells us there's some clever airflow going on (no surprise), that McLaren's signature orange is on the options list (not a shock either) and that carbon trim is available, too (jaws still failing to drop).

We're very much ready to see the whole thing now, something which will happen at next week's New York motor show. Excited?
