New Lamborghini Aventador revealed in Shanghai

Published: 20 Apr 2013

Lamborghini chief Stephan Winkelmann is a cool character. We knew that already. And he further proved it on Friday night by turning up to the Volkswagen Group celebration on the eve of the Shanghai Motor Show 2013 and making a bright yellow, scissor-doored Lamborghini Aventador look cool.

This is it, ladies and gentlemen: Lamborghini’s tribute to itself, a car built to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary, and rocking more yellow than a Californian summer. It’s this yellow for a reason, mind: Mr Winkelmann, taking to the stage to present, said yellow is Lamborghini’s most sold colour in history, ever since the 1960s Miura. Remember that car? We do.

The paintjob – named ‘Giallo Maggio’ – also features a layer of sparkling particles sprayed over the top, because, well… because Lamborghini.

The LP720-4 Anniversario gets a new, redesigned front splitter with huge air intakes, and a bigger rear diffuser, said to make the anniversary model more than 50 per cent more aerodynamically efficient than the standard car. It also has the handy added bonus of making the Aventador even more gloriously pointy than before.

The engine too has benefitted from a little anniversary magic. As the name suggests, it now boasts 720bhp – rather than 700bhp – from that 6.5-litre V12, though the 0-62mph time remains unchanged at 2.9s, as does the 217mph top speed.

No word on price - the standard Aventador costs £253,200 - but the LP720-4 will be limited to a production run of just 100 units worldwide. And, we reckon a certain Mr Keanu Reeves might be at least a little bit interested: the laid-back and charismatic star of The Matrix and of course, Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventuremade a cameo appearance at the Volkswagen Group night, to promote a new mini-movie he’s making with the help of VW Group's cars.

And his response when asked what his favourite model from the Group was? “The Lamborghini, man…”

What’s your take on this little yellow sub-zero-machine, Internet?
