900bhp Mustang in Need for Speed film
There was good news for 14-year-old boys fond of spending hours hunched over a computer in their bedrooms today, as Ford announced it was building a 900bhp Mustang for a movie based on a videogame.
The videogame is called Need for Speed - seasoned gamers will be nodding solemnly at the screen at this point - and will arrive in March next year, coinciding with the Mustang's 50th anniversary. Think Fast & Furious with a little more racing, and you're about there. Though we're not exactly sure what the muscle-bound-bald-men-in-vests quota is set at, nor the quantity of imminently quotable lines debating the quality of tuna sandwiches. We live in hope.
Ford has enlisted the help of its racing division to hike up the power, quite considerably in fact. The all-aluminium 5.8-litre supercharged V8 now produces some 900bhp, stuffed inside a car with custom bodywork - including wider arches - lowered suspension and custom 22in alloy wheels and tyres.
There's also a bespoke paintjob featuring a special silver topped with blue stripes that glow in the dark. Yes, 1990s, it's good to have you back.
"Mustang has an incredible history appearing in movies," said a Ford spokesman, and he's right. A white convertible Mustang popped up in Goldfinger, Steve McQueen made it his own in 1968's seminal Bullitt, and it also featured heavily in Gone in Sixty Seconds.
In fact, we're told it has appeared in nearly 3,000 films and TV shows. Excited by its appearance in Need for Speed? Or would you have preferred a different hero car?
