Video: recap the 2015 GRC season in four drifty, crashy minutes

With a star-studded line-up, machines that’ll leave Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car in the dust, plus a whole dollop of crash, bang, wallop on-track action, Rallycross is probably the perfect motorsport.

Case in point, Red Bull’s Global Rallycross championship. It’s seen a massive rise in popularity over its seven-year lifespan, with 2015 being its biggest year ever.

For the uninitiated, GRC isn’t actually as global as its name suggests – that’s the job of the FIA-stamped World Rallycross Championship.

The GRC is America’s Rallycross championship with only one round – Barbados – breeching the borders of the USA.

Being American, it comes with American sensibilities. Everything is a bit bigger than its European counterpart (races include a mandatory 70ft jump), there’s pyrotechnics , whiter teeth and a hell of a lot of caffeine-fuelled whooping and hollering from the crowd.

The driver roster is a Who’s Who board of drivers from the world of F1, NASCAR, IndyCar, WRC, BMXing, skateboarding and, er, YouTube. Collectively, they duke it out in 600bhp four-wheel-drive monsters cloaked in carbon fibre silhouettes of everyday superminis.

Because of the nature of the racing – six fast-paced and crashy laps on mixed-surfaced circuits before a final – things have a tendency to get exciting. And each car is peppered in GoPro cameras too, so viewers don’t miss a single jump, shunt or roll.

Last season had all of those things. Plus, with seven winners in 12 rounds, an interesting tussle to become champion.

Your favourite YouTube drifter and Pirelli’s favourite customer, Ken Block, had a great start to the season scooping three wins out of a possible five in the first few rounds.

The second half of the season didn’t go so well for Kenny B. He went into the two rounds in Barbados with a chance at the title but, for the second year in a row, rolled out of contention in spectacular fashion.

That meant uber consistent Scott Speed in his bonkers Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle was the man that walked out of the final round in Las Vegas as GRC champ.

But forget the standings for a moment. We know the bits you want to see are the juicy overtakes, jumps and inevitable crashes. Well, they’ve all been packed in the video above.
