Video: an incredible GT3 save

Super-speedy reactions prevent Daniel Juncadella from being spat into the barrier

Published: 08 May 2017

Last weekend, the Blancpain Sprint Series descended on Brands Hatch for the second round of the championship. All your favourite stripped-out supercars went to war around Kent’s Nürburgring for some exhilarating racing, but sometime Force India Formula 1 test driver, part-time Mercedes' DTM reserve driver and full-time Mercedes-based GT programme driver Daniel Juncadella had a moment that had us out of our sofa and slow-clapping.

Wrestling the 6.2-litre, naturally aspirated V8 Mercedes GT GT3 onto the GP circuit, Daniel hopped his very stiff, and very low #88 AKKA ASP Mercedes onto the kerb, causing it to do a sparky 50/50 grind with its flat undercarriage and big diffuser, before being spat back on track and nearly into the barriers. Using Quicksilver-spec reactions, a stab of the brakes and mash of the throttle with opposite lock, Daniel managed to keep on racing and took the menacing Merc to sixth place.
