Sebastian Vettel wins the Race of Champions. By himself

Teammates? Where we're going, we don't need teammates: Vettel bags RoC Nations Cup

Published: 23 Jan 2017

If you want the job done right, goes the saying, you gotta do it yourself. Step forward Sebastian Vettel, four-time Formula One world champion, who emerged victorious at the Race of Champions over the weekend by claiming the 'Nations Cup'. Single-handedly.

You see, the Nations Cup consists of a stellar pairing of drivers, with each pair duking it out over a series of rounds and a variety of fast machinery (held this year at Miami's Marlins Park) to take the title.

Pascal Wehrlein partnered Seb for day one, but was taken out following a crash. No matter. Seb went through the entire second day alone and unbeaten, seeing off Team USA's NASCAR pairing of Kyle and Kurt Busch in the final - and of course, fending off the likes of Jenson Button, Petter Solberg, Tom Kristensen and eventual individual RoC winner Juan Pablo Montoya along the way.

"The Race Of Champions is a great competition," explains Seb, "but yesterday I went out very early. So I wanted to make sure I didn’t leave the States empty-handed. I started on the wrong foot but it helped me to take it a bit more seriously. Today I just wanted to get some more time on the track. I found the rhythm straightaway and it felt pretty good.

"Unlike yesterday, I got along with all the cars today. But that’s the way it goes: sometimes you wake up and it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It obviously worked out well but of course it would have been nicer to share this victory with Pascal.”

Of course, this isn't the first win for Team Germany in the Nations Cup. Vettel - along with Michael Schumacher - notched up six straight victories from 2007 to 2012.

Who needs teammates, eh?
