“No serious injuries” as classic Jag wheel detaches at Goodwood

Thankfully no one was badly hurt after the wheel of a Jaguar Mk1 landed in the crowd

Published: 14 Jul 2023

The news we were all hoping to hear: there were no serious injuries after a wheel fell off a Jaguar Mk1 and bounced into the crowd on Thursday at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. What a relief.

Driven by Grant Williams, the run had begun with a burnout and some drifting through the opening couple of corners, as we’ve seen so many times before along the famous hill climb.

But approaching Goodwood House, the rear left wheel somehow detached itself from the car, barrelling past it at some speed before bouncing onto the hay barriers and into a group of spectators.

Two people were struck by the stray wheel, but thankfully just over an hour after the incident Goodwood confirmed that “there were no serious injuries and those involved were able to go back to enjoying the event.”

It wasn’t the first incident of the day, either: earlier on the one-off Hyundai RN22e concept went straight on at the Molecomb corner, obliterating the hay bales in spectacular fashion. Thankfully both driver and passenger walked away unscathed.
