Nico Hülkenberg, flares and turbo F1 cars: it’s 1977 again

Renault has some fun with its 40th F1 birthday by letting some scary F1 cars loose

As you’ll be aware, it’s the year 2017. So, amongst other things, it’s forty years since Renault got involved with Formula One.

To celebrate this anniversary, and to give Le Mans winner and current Renault F1 driver the enviable chance to dress up like the lost member of the Village People, Renault’s produced this video of its lead driver heading off to the Paul Ricard circuit to rendezvous with France’s most successful F1 driver and a couple of the truly alarming cars that the French produced in their early F1 years.

It’s pretty comical in places, and a sobering display of just how difficult these manual gearbox monsters were to drive in others. So, kettle on, volume up, and enjoy one of the less serious F1 documentaries of recent times. Nico, you should not be wearing that hat, sunshine...
