McLaren’s new customer racer is this 720S GT3 EVO

You’re probably well aware by now that GT3 regulations will replace the GTE class in the FIA World Endurance Championship and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024. McLaren is too, and in preparation for next season it has unveiled the updated 720S GT3 EVO.

Available to buy outright or as a significant upgrade package for your current 720S GT3 (lucky you), the EVO apparently improves aerodynamic performance, serviceability, visibility and “robustness in wheel-to-wheel contact”. This all sounds very promising.

The aero changes come from a new front bumper with extra little winglets and a new splitter that apparently shifts the balance forward and increases overall downforce. We’re told that should also make the 720S racer more consistent in traffic too, while the new spotlight positions improve night-time visibility.

At the rear the wing is still a massive swan-neck unit, but it’s now more easily adjustable and features a taller gurney to add downforce. The suspension has been improved too, with new TTX40 Ohlins four-way adjustable dampers and fresh front and rear upper wishbones to improve tyre management options. McLaren Motorsport also says that the uprights are new to allow for more wheel-to-wheel contact and quicker changes of the whole system. Nice. 

“The McLaren 720S GT3 has been an incredible success in GT3 racing since its phenomenal debut four years ago, leading the Gulf 12 Hour race for several hours,” says McLaren’s Director of Motorsport Ian Morgan.

“Since then it has recorded many race wins and championships, most recently titles in the Asian Le Mans Series, IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship and GT World Challenge Europe last year and has begun 2023 with a podium in the Daytona 24 Hours. In that time we’ve maintained a close relationship with our customer racing teams and have incorporated many of their recommendations into the new EVO package.”

But what if you can’t wait until 2024 for the upgrades? Not to worry, the 720S GT3 EVO has actually been homologated for the 2023 season onwards. Best get practising for Le Mans 2024 now then…
