Listen to the unadulterated joy that is McLaren’s screaming V10

McLaren's latest special operation delivers an engaging experience for the eyes and ears

Published: 17 Jul 2023

The news that McLaren had turned the video-game Vision GT into a car IRL had us shook when we got a sneak peek last August. And as this new clip shows, the Solus GT clinched a screaming victory in the timed shootout at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, sounding like a dream.

The Solus GT fended off competition from Travis Pastrana in the Subaru GL Family Huckster and Michael Lyons in the McLaren M26 - beating both by more than a second.

The 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 of the Solus GT tops out at more than 10,000rpm. Without a converter or silencer, it gives us all the pleasure of that raw F1-like sound.

It took the Solus GT 45.34 seconds to complete the Goodwood circuit, piloted by 29-year-old Marvin Kirchhöfer, though it didn't break the record set last year by Max Chilton in the McMurtry Speirling.

It was the first-time both car and driver – better known for his successes in GP3 – had appeared at the annual motorsport meet. Though the Festival wasn’t without its issues. Saturday’s running was cancelled due to bad weather.
