Hurrah! The Porsche Cayman GT4 rally car is happening
GT4 rally car will arrive in 2020 with a howling six-cylinder engine
Good news! The Porsche Cayman GT4 rally car has definitely made production. After telling Top Gear it needed 100 sales to get the green light, it appears you’ve stepped up and bought them. Well done.
While the concept car – pictured above putting in its first public show on snow and ice in the Austrian mountains – is based on the old Cayman GT4, the one that’ll be in the hands of actual customers next year will be a rally-homologated version of the latest 718 GT4 Clubsport racecar.
That means a 420bhp flat-six engine and some panels made of natural materials. It is – to a small extent – an organic racecar.
Quite what form it’ll take when the lamp pod’s on and with more knobbly tyres fitted, we don’t know, but the end product will conform to the same R-GT regulations that have previously seen cars as diverse as the Abarth 124 Spider and Porsche 911 GT3 compete on snow, tarmac and gravel.
Porsche says the 718 GT4 rally car should be ready for the 2020 season. Excited?
