Hello, Pro: AMG GT2 gets more power and a new pair of undercrackers

Merc’s AMG GT2 Pro boosted with new hardware, push-to-pass tech... and big boy pants

Published: 03 Nov 2023

Merc’s unveiled the AMG GT2 Pro. Almost a year ago, we told you about “AMG’s most powerful ever customer race car”, the GT2. Now we welcome the Pro version. Cue more power via a push-to-pass button. Oh hello, fun.

The standard output of 697bhp from the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine increases to a 739bhp maximum at the push of said fun button. Albeit a temporary boost, amateur track artists and (as the name might suggest) professionals can make better use of the rear-driven sports fiend, stick an overtake and feel like they’ve truly made the cast of the Fast and Furious franchise. No NOx in sight.

Merc's also added four-way shock absorbers, an upgrade from the three on the "plain" GT2.

The GT2 Pro looks as monstrously delectable as the GT2 ever did, though Merc tells us a matt grey finish with cool blue decals, new rear wing end plates and newly fashioned two-tone alloys give the Pro an aesthetically defining edge.

Inside, if you think the yoke-styled wheel looks more like a gaming control and integrates push-to-pass exactly where you’d expect to find it on the PS5, you wouldn’t be far off. Originally developed for e-sports use, the Cube Controls wheel has been optimised for the GT2.

The comprehensive suite of safety features is what makes the GT2 Pro so perfect for less experienced drivers. Customers of the model can also expect a personalised race suit, gloves, shoes and 'competition underwear', as part of Mercedes-AMG's partnership with Puma. Genuinely.

There's also the opportunity to upgrade the cockpit with a drinking system and helmet cooling package.

Christoph Sagemüller, head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, said: “We are very proud to have achieved the next milestone in the customer sports segment with the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Pro.

"Demand for pure track day cars has increased significantly, so therefore, we also respond to the expansion of the derivatisation in the track day and club sport segment at the same time. With its technical refinements that include, among others, the new Push2Pass function, the GT2 Pro is the ultimate track day tool.

"Moreover, the car is easy and quick to drive. The GT2 Pro is exceptionally agile, allowing the fascination of racing to be experienced enormously, both for amateurs and professionals.”

Extra power will cost extra pennies, of course. The GT2 Pro will set you back £416,000, up from £355,000 non-Pro GT2. Now, we're off to tell Santa just how good we've been this year...
