Good luck buying a prettier race car than this Jaguar XJ220C

Don't spend £2m on a modern hypercar. Buy this (sort of) Le Mans winner instead

Published: 08 Nov 2018

If you’ve got a couple of million quid to spend on a supercar, you’re currently spoiled for choice. Between the McLaren Speedtail, Aston Martin Valkyrie and Mercedes-AMG One – not to mention whatever hypercars Ferrari, Bugatti and Koenigsegg have planned next – there’s an abundance of stuff to choose from with 1,000bhp a mere entry point.

But you could forgo them all and buy an actual Le Mans winner. Well, sort of. This Jaguar XJ220C won the GT class at the 1993 Le Mans 24 Hours, only to be disqualified for its lack of catalytic converters. Bet it sounds all the better for missing them off, though.

It retains its livery from June ‘93, number 50 and the stickers of John Nielsen, David Brabham and David Coulthard included. It was lauded the GT winner on the day, and held its title for around a month, being disqualified on boring technicalities long after the chequered flag had fallen.

So we reckon you can still claim it’s a winner. And with styling like this, it’s a winner regardless of its race record. If you can name a more beautiful GT class car, tell us below. We can’t.

It’s not road legal, of course. But if you can casually fritter away the £2.2m to £2.8m this XJ220C is estimated to fetch at Bonhams’ Bond Street sale next month, you can probably afford all the private, noise limit-free trackdays your heart desires. What a life…
