Video: a 1,150bhp Toyota GT86 drifts like crazy
Formula Drift champion sneaks heavily turbo'd 86 into Millbrook's tricky Alpine Route
A few weeks ago, Toyota did a few stunts with a GT86. A 1,150bhp, turbocharged GT86, no less. It etched out the GT86 logo via donuts and Toyota’s marketing department did lots of high fives.
But that was all in the safe confines of the skidpan at Millbrook proving ground. An expansive space with comforting run-off, designed specifically for such behaviour. The clue’s in its name.
It seems the driver – Fredric Aasbø, a drift champion – found it all a little bit un-dangerous, though. A bit too much safety. So off he went to Millbrook’s Alpine Route, which is designed to mimic a twisty, bumpy, tortuous mountain road. It’s used to develop how mainstream cars handle and you’ll have seen it act the part of country roads in films and TV, too.
It’s not a forgiving environment. Barriers, signposts and trees are waiting there, ready to be hit. Not the place to take a GT86 with more power than a Bugatti Veyron, obviously…
As you’ll see in the video above, though, Aasbø did exactly that. It’s a follow-up video to the one with the choreographed donuts, and we think it’s actually more exciting. Make your own mind up above…
