This modified Hyundai Ioniq wants to hypermile

Hyundai has teamed up with Bisimoto Engineering to build a modified Hyundai Ioniq for the upcoming SEMA show in Las Vegas.

One thing needs to be immediately noted here. It’s the fact that Bisimoto – run by Bisi Ezerioha – has shunned its usual penchant for fitting a comically powerful drivetrain into a place you’d least expect. This is a company, after all, responsible for a 1,000bhp Hyundai Genesis.

“We’ve focused on a variety of technical elements to bring efficiency, aero and design to the highest level,” Bisi explains of the ‘HyperEconiq Ioniq’. Ah, we see what he did there.

This particular version comes with a ‘pulse-chamber’ exhaust system (for better volumetric efficiency), low-friction engine oil, low rolling-resistance tyres, aluminium brake calipers, NGK spark plugs (maybe throw one to Ferrari, eh?), optimised supercharging, and combined fuel economy “well over” 80mpg.

Interestingly, while Hyundai claims 83.1mpg officially, our test of the hybrid Ioniq last year yielded a 50mpg return.

The familiarly SEMA-friendly stuff you’ll be able to spot. A ‘Bisimoto Dream’ aero kit, comprised of a new front splitter, wing, side splitters and rear wheel covers. Lowered suspension via Progress Performance coilovers. Racing seats (OK, you can’t see them, but they’re there). One-piece carbonfibre wheels measuring 19 inches.

“This innovative concept,” explains Hyundai, “integrates the best hypermiling, economy and friction technologies.”

Reckon Bisi should have laid waste to that hybrid drivetrain and stuck in a stupendously tuned version of the Kia Stinger’s 3.3-litre V6? Let us know below...
