Allow Hennessey’s 1000bhp Corvette Z06 to melt your speakers

Texan tuner tests its ‘HPE1000’ 'Vette package. It’s loud

Published: 26 May 2016

The Corvette Z06 – a previous Top Gear Muscle Car of the Year, no less – hardly wants for power in its natural 650bhp state. Hennessey – who's behind the world’s fastest convertible and other such road-going missiles – nevertheless offers a fleet of packages to turn up that wick.

Upgrades to 750bhp, 800bhp, and 850bhp all feature on the round-numbers-only menu. And then there’s the HPE1000 package. Can you guess its claimed power output?

In the video below, you can watch – and be deafened by – a thusly-equipped Z06 taking to the dyno. Developing 850bhp and 711lb ft at the rear wheels (the tuning package numbers refer to power measured at the crank, before drivetrain losses), this is about as angry a Vette as you’re likely to meet.

Modifications include forged aluminium pistons, a high-flow supercharger, reinforced pushrods, a beefier crankshaft and basically anything else that spins, plus a stainless steel exhaust and – get this – Hennessey floor mats. Just in case your passenger wasn’t obliquely aware your Z06 was something a bit fruity.

Claimed performance figures are approaching the Bugatti league: 0-60mph in 2.5sec, a top speed of over 220mph and the good ol’ quarter-mile dusted in 9.7sec and 147mph.

Doubtless there’ll be eardrum-bothering drag strip videos of the HPE1000 Vette attempting such barmy feats in due course. In the meantime, watch this one give its best shot at ripping a dyno from its foundations.
