The last 991-era Porsche 911 is being auctioned for charity

Proceeds will be donated to United Way’s Worldwide COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund

Published: 15 Apr 2020

The last-ever 991-era Porsche 911, this rather fetching ‘Heritage’ spec Speedster, is destined to live a quiet, comfortable life in some very wealthy person’s climate-controlled garage. It certainly won’t be driven anywhere. Tragic, we’re sure you’ll agree.

But good will come of its sale in an online RM Sotheby’s auction this week. Much good. Proceeds from said sale, likely to far exceed the 911 Speedster’s £211,599 RRP, will be donated to charity United Way’s Worldwide COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund which does, well, exactly what it says on the tin.

For reasons we’re not entirely sure we understand, the winning bidder must possess US residency. So, Americans, whip out those credit cards and start bidding way over the odds for this most-special of 911 Speedsters. Remember, those dollars are headed somewhere worthwhile.

You remember the 911 Speedster – the run-out, 991-era 911 of which only 1,948 were built? Sure you do. Effectively a GT3 with the roof lopped-off, it has the ace 4.0-litre flat-six, here augmented with individual throttle bodies, a seven-speed manual and wailing 9,000rpm red-line. You can read about just how excellent it is (very) by clicking on these words.

Win the auction and you don’t just get the car (and the warm, gooey feeling of having done something good for all humanity). Porsche is throwing in a letter of authenticity signed by legends Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser and Andreas Preuninger, a Porsche Design chronograph and a leather-bound book containing photos of it being built. You’ll also get a trip to Porsche’s HQ in Germany, and be the company’s guest at Monterey Car Week in August, where the car will be handed over.

Tempted? Live in the States? The auction on RM’s website begins at 11am EDT on April 15th, and ends at 1pm EDT on the 22nd.
