Lambo Roadster faster than a plane!

Hmmm, this is all a bit familiar, isn't it? Lamborghini has just released some news that five of its Aventador Roadsters have clocked over 200mph on a Miami runway, outgunning a jet aircraft.

Despite much scratching of chins here at TG, you have to admit that a Lamborghini outrunning a JET is pretty cool, no? The LP 700-4 Roadsters were given special authorisation from the US Federal Aviation Administration and Miami-Dade County to speed down a Miami International airport runway.

Now, the current passenger airliner takeoff speed on a runway is between 150mph and 180mph, so the recorded speed of 210mph means that throw in a bit of upwards aero, and the Aventador could get airborne.

Of course, it'd probably need a bit more thrust than that 6.5-litre V12, but its 0-62mph time of under three seconds and removable lid means at least some hairpieces will enter the earth's upper atmosphere.

It's all part of a massive celebration year for Lamborghini: the brand is 50 years old in 2013, and prior to the runway drive, Lamborghini held a 50-car parade down Miami's South Beach. Another celebration was the unveiling of the new 2013/2014 Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 FL2 car (the red one in the pictures above).

It's been developed in collaboration with Reiter Engineering - those plucky chaps responsible for race-bred Lamborghinis - and is based on the 2013 model year Gallardo (you can read TG's first drive of the new Gallardo here).

Lamborghini tells us the new GT3 FL2 has been developed for "long-distance performance" and includes '24-hour' brakes, improved engine cooling, lower fuel consumption, a new aero kit, a new front splitter and rear carbon diffuser, and a 25kg weight drop over the previous Gallardo GT3 car.

No doubt it'll be a fighty little thing, because Reiter has form: since 2007 the team's Lambo GT contenders have secured 199 victories and 350 podium positions. This new GT3 FL2 is the first time they've directly collaborated with Lamborghini too...
