Polestar 1 production will end later this year

And there’ll be a special edition with *gooooold* paint

Published: 19 Apr 2021

Bad News: Polestar has confirmed it will end production of its first model, the halo performance hybrid Polestar 1, later this year.

First unveiled back in 2017 (and indeed previewed by a concept car as far back as 2013), the 1 represented Volvo’s performance offshoot’s bold new direction. Underneath the 1’s GT flanks sat the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder from the XC90, producing just over 300bhp.

That’s matched to a pair of electric motors on the rear, and with everything singing from the same sheet it kicks out 600bhp and 737lb ft of torque.

Handsome, too, that carbon bodywork doffing its cap to the classic P1800. “It’s hard to believe our beautiful halo car comes to the end of its production life later this year,” said Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath.

“This car was not designed to fit into a box,” he added. “We didn’t design it to compete with other cars, and neither did we design it to suit a specific target customer. Polestar 1 was about pushing our own boundaries.” Naturally, lessons learned from the 1 will feed into Polestar’s future models.

There is Good News, though: Polestar has introduced a special edition with a bespoke, matte gooooold paintjob with matching calipers and black wheels. The inside of this particular 1 will also feature gold stitching, and just 25 will be built.

Be quick though – a “limited number” of build slots remain for this final year of production.
