Meet the electric VW Golf racecar
Cross an e-Golf with a Clubsport S and you get Revozport’s emissions-free track special
If you don’t currently own a VW Golf GTI Clubsport S because a) you didn’t make the limited edition’s waiting list and b) you dislike petrol cars anyway, then rejoice. This is the answer.
The work of tuner Revozport – who knows a thing or two about fast Golfs – it’s the electric-powered VW e-Golf with some racer-y bits on it. Meet the Razor 7E.
There’s a new aerodynamic profile, with spoilers and splitters made from carbonfibre and some lovely little dive planes up front, a la Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0.
You might note the suspension drop, with adjustable KW coilovers fitted. There are big Brembo brakes and race wheels with semi-slick tyres, which are altogether more serious than the eco-minded items on a stock e-Golf.
A full cast of safety features is fitted too. Namely a roll cage, six-point harnesses, towing eyes and fire extinguishers. How prone an electric car is to catch fire we’re not sure; there’s no petrol, after all. Good to know they’re there though, right?
With all those mechanical upgrades, you might think the Razor 7E is kicking out Tesla kinds of power. Sadly not. It’s unchanged from the standard e-Golf.
But despite its modest 113bhp (this is based on the pre-facelift e-Golf), this is a surprisingly swift thing in urban environments. Which, so far, is exactly where it’s raced, launching the E-Touring Car Challenge on Hong Kong streets last year.
It looks like Revozport will now sell you one, though. Could this finally be the trackday car that allows you to avoid the hideous fuel rip-off at race circuits? Or is an electric racecar simply too flawed outside the big-money world of Formula E?
