The new Vuhl 05RR is Bugatti Veyron fast
Goodwood debut for hardcore 05: 0-62mph in 2.7secs and 600bhp-per-tonne
Vuhl first strayed onto our radar a couple of years back when the '05' was announced. That car - a lightweight, track-only special offering similar thrills to Britain's burdgeoning ranks of small, banshee track specials - hailed from Mexico. It was fast.
This new one is even faster. And more powerful. And offers more bhp-per-tonne. It's called, fittingly, the Vuhl 05RR, and has made its worldwide premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. 'Full Throttle' and all that...
So, this new car gets a full carbon fibre body (where the old one got fibreglass panels), along with an aluminium-carbon monocoque that helps cut weight to 640kg (without any fluids). Then comes Ford's 2.3-litre Ecoboost engine, here making a staggering 100bhp more than the standard 05's 285bhp.
That's right, you're looking at a 640kg car with a 385bhp turbocharged engine on board, with a six-speed sequential gearbox and rear-wheel drive, naturally. Then there's that astonishing 600bhp-per-tonne power-to-weight figure. It's all about power-to-weight, really. Why, you ask? How about 0-62mph in 2.7secs? Off the line that'd keep a Bugatti Chiron honest.
Of course, it only tops out at 160mph, but we'd imagine that'd feel suitably supersonic in a car with no roof and a windscreen smaller than your smart phone. The centre of gravity has also been lowered by 50mm, and Vuhl has taken the wise decision of fitting a 'high-speed' steering rack. That, and lightweight, carbon fibre wheels, and a revised aero package over the 05, which takes in a new rear wing (stretching full width across the back) and 'F1-inspired' diffuser strakes. Lots of work was done at MIRA's wind tunnel.
It's pegged as a road-registered, track special, but only the brave need apply. Brave people like Manor Racing's reserve driver Jordan King, who'll be piloting the bewinged monster at Goodwood. “There’s usually a big difference between what people consider a supercar and what is a proper racing car," he said.
"I’m really excited to drive the Vuhl 05RR because it has the perfect recipe: lightweight to the core, huge power-to-weight, and it looks incredible. Goodwood is going to be a tonne of fun," he added.
Iker Echeverria, Vuhl's technical director, adds: “The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a Mecca for performance car aficionados and the perfect place to reveal the stunning new 05RR. We’ve upgraded this car in every area to make it faster, more engaging and more aggressive.”
Prices are TBC, but the standard 05 costs a whisker under £60,000, so expect north of £70k for this. Click here for our first drive of the regular 05, and then let us know below where you think it fits in the list of the ultimate trackday toys.
