The Robocar has done a self-driving run at Goodwood!
Roborace sends its autonomous racer up the hill, succeeds. Watch the on-board here
They’ve only gone and done it. The futuristic Robocar has managed to complete the Goodwood Festival of Speed’s hillclimb… autonomously. It becomes the first ever self-driving car to have done so.
The Roborace team sent the Robocar for a test run earlier this morning, where it managed the run without the assistance of a safety driver.
A brief recap on the tech powering Robocar: there are four electric motors, a total of 500bhp, a variety of computer processors and LiDAR, radar, GPS, ultrasonic and camera sensors. The shape of course, comes from the mind of Daniel Simon, who's previously worked at Volkswagen, Bugatti, and the smaller matter of the vehicles from the Tron movie.
“Roborace plays an important role in the future of mobility, challenging public perceptions and providing a platform to advance new technologies,” explained Charles Gordon-Lennon, founder of the Festival of Speed.
“This makes them the perfect partner to undertake this significant feat,” he added.
We’ll have an in-depth story about Roborace, the Robocar and its development sibling nicknamed ‘DevBot’, in due course. For now, sit back and watch the video above of the first ever fully autonomous run at Goodwood.
