The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is the practical choice at Geneva

Spare a thought for the new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, revealed here ahead of its launch at next week's Geneva Motor Show. 

Launching it at an absolutely jam-packed motor show is like releasing a prog-rock album in 1973 that isn’t Dark Side of the Moon, or putting out a medieval murder-drama that isn’t Game of Thrones. 

So, before it’s buried under a landslide of Ferraris, Paganis and McLarens, let’s get to grips with what the Tiguan Allspace has to offer. 

Well, it’s much like a regular Tiguan, to be honest, but the Tiguan OldSpice “closes the gap between the Tiguan and the Touareg,” with an extra 109mm in the wheelbase, 215mm extra length and the option of seven seats. 

As you might expect, there’s more room in the back of the Tiguan SpaceRace, especially if you leave the seven-seat option box unticked. There’s 1920 litres of space in the back of the five-seat version, and 760 in the seven seat version. And yes, those numbers are as meaningless to us as they are to you. Suffice to say that there is much space there, for sporting equipment, parenthood paraphernalia or whatever else the Volkswagen marketers think you actually use it for. Probably many bags’ worth of stuff from Primark. 

Powering the Tiguan Espace is the usual assortment of four-cylinder engines, ranging from a 148bhp petrol to a 237bhp diesel. The base-model diesel and petrol will be front-drive out of the box, but everything from the mid-spec, 178bhp petrol and 187bhp diesel comes with DSG and all-wheel drive as standard. There’s a total of six engine choices, with varying levels of power and consumption, as you’d expect.

As befits a modern SUV, the Tiguan SpaceInvader has many LED lights, semi-autonomous features and a plethora of ways to connect your telephone. 

The Tiguan actually looks like a pretty decent bit of kit to be fair – nothing to set your world ablaze, but the kind of car that real people (gasp) use in the real world (also gasp). It’ll also start at €30,000 when it goes on sale in Germany later on this year, which should mean that you’ll be able to spec up a decent seven-seater for about £30k.
