Geneva Motor Show

The new Toyota Auris will be more dynamic

The new Auris – Corolla outside of Europe – will be more interesting. Hurrah!

Published: 26 Feb 2018

This is the new Toyota Corolla, or Auris on European shores. Well, it’s a small sliver of it. Toyota’s being as coy as ever and not really showing us much of the car before its covers come off at next week’s Geneva motor show.

We’re told it will have a ‘dynamic exterior design’, though, and the clues are certainly there in this picture. As well as a two-tone paint scheme – a black roof sitting atop a sort of gold colour – there’s a kicked-up window line and some angular-looking lights.

It looks more than a little French to us, with hints of both the Renault Megane and Clio to it. Hopefully the full thing is a touch more original, but either way, it's already the most interesting-looking Toyota hatchback since the late nineties Corolla WRC rally car.

Beneath the skin, we’re promised two types of hybrid powertrain. They’ll twin a 2.0-litre petrol engine with electric power, but will likely do so under Toyota’s new philosophy, where you can choose between hybrid setups that favour economy or performance.

Alongside the new Auris on Toyota’s Geneva stand will be a lightly updated Aygo city car, with a whole 2bhp more than before, cleaner emissions and a light styling refresh.

We’ll also get our first decent glimpse of the new Supra, though Toyota remains weirdly coy about relaunching perhaps its most exciting road car.

“Toyota will also reveal a modern racing concept which signals its commitment to bring the brand’s most iconic sports car back to the market,” says the company’s Geneva preview, not once using the S-word nor shedding any light on what we’ll actually see, besides showing us this concept will have a large spoiler. Excited?
