Meet the quite nice looking Hyundai i30 Tourer
It's got tons of space and sensible engines, but it looks decent too. Hurrah
It looks alright, doesn’t it? This is the new Hyundai i30 Tourer, and while above all it’s an unashamedly sensible small Korean estate, they’ve managed to give it some pretty smart styling, too.
Note the swoopy roofline and how much the window line drops away at the back. Squint (reasonably hard, admittedly) and there’s perhaps some Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake in the side profile.
Inside the body, things are as functional as you’d expect. A total of 1,650 litres of boot space makes it one of the biggest cars in its class for shifting stuff about, as well as more commodious than the Ford Mondeo estate from the next class up. Impressive.
You’ve a choice of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, but we suspect the pick of the range – as ever with these things – will be the 1.0-litre turbo petrol, with 118bhp and a keen little noise from its three cylinders. Minicabbers will no doubt default to the diesel, though, which is a 108bhp 1.6.
What we want to see, though, is an N performance version of the i30 Tourer. We’ll see the i30 N hatchback at the Frankfurt motor show in the autumn, with the VW Golf GTI et al in its sights. The hot hatch estate is one of our favourite sub-niches on sale, so we’d welcome a Hyundai into the fray, however unlikely it may be.
The second of three Hyundai i30 body shapes (there'll be a four-door 'fastback', too), the i30 Tourer takes its bow at the Geneva motor show next month. It’ll struggle for attention beside new Ferraris and Paganis, naturally. But it looks decent, no?
