The Ford Fiesta ST has been upgraded to 200bhp

Ford hot hatch gets a bit more power and nicer trim, just to make us love it more

Published: 29 Feb 2016

Among the exceedingly muscular supercars we expect to see at Geneva this week, there will be this. It’s a relatively sane looking Ford Fiesta ST.

This ST200 ought to be a cracker, though, the Fiesta’s hot hatch iteration given more power and some nicer trim, presumably as it gets ready to bow out completely. It might nark anyone who’s just bought an ST, but it should please everyone else greatly.

The changes aren’t earth shattering: its 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine is upgraded from 179 to 197bhp (or 200PS, hence the name), enough to shave a couple of tenths off the 0-62mph time, which now stands at 6.7 seconds. Ford is promising better in-gear performance, too, so it should rip through its six gears rapaciously.

It also comes in a special specification, with new ‘Storm Grey’ paint, some fancy matt black alloys and lots of nice red detailing inside and out. All of these features are exclusive to the ST200 - of which there'll be just 500 made a year - to keep bragging rights strong. And if you recognise the badge, may we remind you of the short-run 2.5-litre V6 Mondeo ST200, released back in 1999?

No prices have yet been announced, but we’d budget on around £21,000 for one. Which is a few grand more than standard, but the ST200 should still be a bit of a bargain when a Renaultsport Clio Trophy or Peugeot Sport 208 GTI both cost around £22k.

Oh, and if you're still upset because you’re one of the 19,200 Brits who’s bought a ‘normal’ Fiesta ST and can't have this? May we point you in the direction of the 212bhp Mountune upgrade
