You can now buy a BMW i8 in RED

And it costs just £8,000 more than the standard version. Bargain

Published: 12 Feb 2016

That’s right: BMW has unveiled the i8 Protonic Red Edition, and it’s available for a limited time only. In RED.

Costing a mere £112,535 (the original, which you could say we 'quite' like, was £104,540), this special version of the German hybrid comes with a handsome paintjob, red double stitching in the cabin and “exclusive carbon fibre and ceramic trims.” Sounds fancy.

And what else do you get for your additional eight grand outlay? Erm, nothing. It’s literally just thread and some paint. Yeah.

BMW say that this limited-run offers “more individuality”, and while that might be true the lack of changes which distinguish it from the base model makes it feel a bit... superficial.

Having said that, it genuinely looks quite smart in crimson (virtually every single one you see in the UK is grey) and after 5,400 sales in 2015, BMW are hardly going to struggle shifting a rarer version of an already popular car.

The Protonic Red Edition will be produced in Leipzig from July before going on sale this September. Best not touch the piggy bank until then.
