Infiniti reveals Q30 Concept hatchback

Infiniti has revealed a sketch of its Q30 Concept car; a premium small hatchback that will be Made In Britain.

Last year Nissan's posh arm announced its new BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 botherer would be built at the firm's award-winning Sunderland plant, with production beginning in 2015.

It'll share Mercedes-Benz's front-wheel-drive architecture, so essentially represents Infiniti's take on the new A-Class. Think it's strange that Infiniti is using an A-Class platform to build a rival A-Class? Well, as we told you when the Aston Martin/AMG deal was signed, Mercedes doesn't see Infiniti as a rival (it sees Lexus as a Japanese rival), and Infiniti traditionally competes against BMW. So there.

Infiniti tells us this Q30 represents the next stage in its design language that saw the Etherea hatchback, the Essence coupe, and the lovely Emerg-E concept supercar. Infiniti is keen to break out of the German triumvirate's styling cliches too, promising the Q30 will "inspire greater expectations of what is possible beyond the designs dominant in the market today".

Obviously, much of this concept glitter will be buffed out, but we are promised something ‘muscular'. Cheetahs and other speedy big cats are referenced by Infiniti. Speedy big cats are cool.

We're told this new Q30 will be the first Infiniti influenced from the ground up by the company's Director of Performance, some bloke called Sebastian Vettel. Wonder if it automatically speeds up whenever it sees a Holden...
