Should the Monaco Grand Prix stay on the F1 calendar?

Rumour has it that the Monaco GP’s place in F1 is under threat. Should it stay or go?

Published: 31 May 2022

Every year, Formula 1 rocks up in Monaco for its poster event; one that has brought glamour and prestige to the championship since its inception way back in 1950. And every year viewers dismiss it as ‘boring’, chiefly because of the lack of overtaking.

They have a point. This weekend’s race - won by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez - saw precious few on-track overtakes despite the rain making it suitably treacherous for the drivers. The year before there were literally zero, aside from moves made in the pits.

Sadly, it’s been this way for quite a while. Modern F1 cars are giants compared to the machinery of old, and while new rules for 2022 are designed to make racing closer, they were never going to fix the tight, twisty streets of the tiny principality.

And rumour has it that F1 bosses are finally getting tired of Monaco’s, um, uniqueness. The lack of action on race day is one thing, but the fact that Monaco pays a relatively small race fee - roughly a quarter of the sum reportedly stumped up by the likes of Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan - is leaving it feel a little short changed.

It also doesn’t help that the TV direction of the Monaco Grand Prix is controlled by a local company, in contrast to every other race on the calendar where F1’s own staff are in charge.

It’s that perceived gap in quality that gave us the Lance Stroll cutaway meme (Twitter users will know it all too well), now F1’s social media equivalent of the Rickroll. Says it all really.

So, time to put yourself in the shoes of F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali: do you keep Monaco on the calendar for the spectacle, or ditch it for good?
