Renault Kwid: good concept, sad reality

This is the Renault Kwid, and well, it’s made us feel a little bit glum.

Remember the ballsy little crossover that bore the same name in concept form last year, complete with yellow roof, McLaren-style butterfly doors and integrated drone? Well, this is the production version. Has a car ever undergone a more depressing slide from concept to reality?
 
OK, so the wildest design flourishes were never likely to hang around, and in truth the production Kwid’s basics are absolutely fine.
 
Aimed at the Indian car market, it mixes Twingo dimensions with crossover-esque raised ride height. It has a multimedia screen that can host satnav, and yet it will be priced from the equivalent of £3000. Yep, three grand. Whether “the interior trim is reassuring and status-enhancing” in real life is something we’ll reserve judgement on, but the Kwid ticks a lot of boxes.
 
But why does it have to look so sad? We know budget cars can't splash the cash on blingy alloys or heavily sculpted bodywork, but did it have to be so… greeny-brown? So very dull?
 
It's not like Renault doesn't know how to make titchy cars can look properly interesting - just look at the new Twingo. The Kwid resembles a jacked–up, rebadged Sandero painted the colour of a pond in an unloved garden, and all the fun we want from our city cars is absent. So forgive us for being melancholy about this, but we wanted the Kwid to justify its unconventional name by being, well, unconventional.
