The Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe is here

Published: 14 Jul 2014

Clearly, seeing off the rest of the puny humans of the world at football was just the start. Now Germany wants to crush the puny human cars, too. Possibly with this: the new V12-powered Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe.

We're not sure it's just a coincidence this car appears the day after Germany lifted the World Cup. But whatever, be afraid. It now takes its rightful place at the top of the S-Class Coupe tree, featuring as it does a monster 6.0-litre twin turbo V12 engine powering the rear wheels.

And that engine is quite something, too. It's the most powerful to be fitted to an S-Class Coupe, with 630bhp and a whopping 737lb ft of torque (a nice, round 1000Nm). Notable features include an aluminium crankcase, a forged crankshaft in high-grade alloy steel, a carbon fibre engine cover and even that little engine plate bearing the name of the man who built it.

There is a seven-speed AMG automatic gearbox somewhere in the middle between engine and furious tyre-squealing, too, with three modes (efficiency, sport and manual). All in, the forces at work conspire to propel this S65 from 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds (0.2s quicker than the S65 saloon but slower than the S63 Coupe), and a limited top speed of 155mph.

There's also Mercedes' fancy new toys in the shape of 'magic body control' (that scans the road ahead and adjusts the suspension to compensate) and 'curve tilting', which actively leans the car in during cornering. As we found on the S63 Coupe, it's great.

There are huge composite brakes (optional ceramics are available). There are 20in forged alloy wheels. There's high-sheen chrome at the front, sides and rear, a new front splitter, V12 Biturbo lettering on the wings and of course, the twin exhaust pipes at the back.

Inside it's exquisite too: AMG leather with a diamond pattern, AMG sports seats developed for long-distance comfort, leather in the roof, in the dashboard and door panels, and a new three-spoke steering wheel. There's even a head-up display and touchpad.

"There are AMG fans for whom our V12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things," explains AMG chief Tobias Moers. UK prices have yet to be finalised but expect to pay just over £180k for the 'measure of all things'.

But which would you have? S63 Coupe, S65 saloon or this new Coupe?
