This is Lamborghini’s all-new twin turbo V8, and it'll redline at 10,000rpm

This just in: Lamborghini has confirmed that its Huracan replacement will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8... and a trio of rear-mounted electric motors. Yup, it's a hybrid.

But before you mourn for the Huracan's howling 5.2-litre V10 - which, incidentally, you can listen to in full ear-shredding glory in Top Gear Tunnel Run - be aware that the new V8 will scream its way to a redline of 10,000rpm. Sheesh.

The all-new flat-plane unit will power what Lamborghini has for now codenamed the ‘634’. And no, that’s not a reference to the power output: the new car will actually be sending 800bhp and 538lb ft of torque to the road through the same eight-speed auto 'box found in the Revuelto. Still missing the V10?

Lamborghini says this engine has been created using a blank canvas, which is no great surprise given that the engineers over at Sant’Agata have had to find room for the inverter and axial electric unit in between the engine and dual-clutch gearbox.

Apparently the motors can chip in 148bhp and 221lb ft all on their own. Not too shabby.

With that in mind, Lambo claims that this new car will ‘surpass’ the Huracan range in terms of performance and ‘driving emotion’. Well, they weren't going to say it was worse, were they?

634 is penned in for launch later this year, with Lamborghini now firmly into its electrified future having first dipped its toe into the water with the Revuelto.
