The Flying Huntsman 90 Spyder is a two-seater, open-topped new Defender
Chief designer Afzal Kahn wants to keep the art of British coachbuilding alive
The Chelsea Truck Company's coachbuilding arm - dubbed 'Flying Huntsman' - has revealed its latest project. Known for its modded 6x6 Defender-based pickup, the new Flying Huntsman 90 Spyder is, at heart, a niche-busting open-topped, two-seater GT that can off-road.
Based on the current Land Rover Defender platform, we're told it'll have handcrafted hammer formed panels made from lightweight NS3 grade aluminium, while the factory roof will be replaced with a removable, durable canvas that’ll be discretely stowed away for some breezy open-top fun. The new design apparently won’t compromise on any of the Defender 90's factory-issued storage capacity, either.
Each production car will take six months to build using traditional craft methods working out of a factory in Coventry, the same one that worked on the Aston Martin One-77, no less.
Afzal Kahn, chief designer, said: "This project is about more than creating another exciting and unique vehicle; it’s at once a consolidation and continuation of our legacy of manufacturing special vehicles, supporting British craftsmanship and keeping the art of coachbuilding alive and relevant."
Flying Huntsman is only committing to creating eight cars each year. As you might expect, each will be individually numbered and customisation will be the name of the game. Since Kahn doesn’t mention any prices, we imagine it’ll depend on commission, but previous models have gone for north of £100,000.
