This is the 595bhp Aston Vanquish S Volante

Aston Martin chooses mid-winter to give us its latest V12 convertible. Expect noise

Published: 30 Jan 2017

Alright, so we’re deep in the middle of a particularly chilly winter. But that hasn’t stopped Aston Martin giving us a new convertible car. Meet the Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante. And yes, it really is quite pretty.

It ought to be an easy car to understand, too, essentially a roofless version of the Vanquish S coupe. So that means a 6-litre V12 – one free of turbos, unlike the new DB11’s V12 engine – with 595bhp and 465lb ft.

Aston hasn’t released performance figures for the Volante, but something a tiny smidge slower than the coupe’s 3.5sec 0-62mph time and 201mph top speed is a good bet, owing to the cabrio’s extra weight. Its 21.6mpg fuel economy is the same as the hard-top Vanquish S, mind.

The Volante’s side profile is free of complexity and, to these eyes, really quite beautiful. The styling gets a bit more technical at the car’s pointy ends, with a carbonfibre front splitter and rear diffuser aiding the aerodynamics. The latter looks downright naughty, particularly as it houses four exhaust pipes.

Because yes, this is a convertible V12 supercar, and sound is an unavoidable issue. You may kid yourself you’re buying the Volante to catch a bit of sun, or to wear your favourite top hat free of headroom issues. But really you buy this car because you want your lugholes full of noise. The joyous noise that only a naturally aspirated V12 – making surely its last appearance in an Aston via this Volante – can provide.

Other points of note are the eminently kerbable diamond-turned alloys and some wildly intricate interior stitching, though we imagine both can be switched for something else should you get intimate with the options list.

No price as yet, but with the coupe costing a whisker under £200,000, the Volante should wade in somewhere around £212,000. A lot of money, then. But find your nearest tunnel, and you can expect a heck of a lot of noise…
