What do you make of Ford’s Mach-E police car concept?
Electric SUV receives the blues and twos treatment in new makeover
Britain’s police forces could soon have a new, silent, crime-fighting tool at their disposal, in the shape of this, Ford’s Mach-E cop car concept.
Sporting a revised 999 livery, which Ford says utilises a ‘high specification material’ to ‘maximise day and night visibility’, it should be easy enough to notice coming your way. Y’know, just in case the flashing lights and wailing sirens weren’t already enough.
Speaking of which, it’s been kitted out with the usual lights, sirens, radios and other police paraphernalia, as you’d expect. Oh, and before the naysayers question how that impacts on range, power for the police gubbins comes from the Mach-E’s 12V battery, rather than the drive battery. Can’t imagine those lights will help with aerodynamic efficiency, mind.
The initial concept is based on a standard range all-wheel-drive Mach-E, but Ford says it's planning on offering Extended Range versions too for longer pursuits. The top-spec GT variant will also be available, equipped with a 480bhp twin-motor powertrain and good for 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds. Perfect for catching any would-be thieves red-handed.
It’s currently on display at the Emergency Services Show at the NEC in Birmingham, while Ford says there’s already interest from the Metropolitan, Sussex, Surrey, South Wales, Dyfed Powys, Devon & Cornwall and Scotland police forces. About time those Vauxhall Astra diesels were due an upgrade, after all.
You can see how it compares to the best of the rest in cop cars here, and don’t forget to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
