The Mercedes Vision EQXX has driven 1,200km without charging

The Mercedes Vision EQXX concept - fresh from driving 1,008km from Stuttgart to Cassis without a single charge stop in April - has ventured out to stretch its legs again, this time smashing the record it set in the spring.

Not content with its initial attempt, the Vision EQXX has now been driven from its base in Germany all the way to Silverstone in England, clocking up a remarkable 1,202km in the process.

Starting in Stuttgart, it crossed the French border near Strasbourg before heading for Calais to board the Eurotunnel. Then it made its way round the M25 (oh the horror), stopped off at Mercedes F1’s base in Brackley for a driver change, before finally rocking up at the Northamptonshire circuit.

The entire journey took 14 hours and 30 minutes. And apparently the air con was on for eight of those hours. Impressive going.

Don’t forget either that the Vision EQXX has a battery capacity of around 100kWh, which is what you’ll find in the Tesla Model S these days. So it’s not like Merc has cheated by bolting some tyres and a steering wheel onto an impossibly large number of cells.

Though it looks like a spaceship (drag coefficient of just 0.17), power is quite modest at 241bhp and top speed is a mere 87mph. Meanwhile unladen weight is still a not-insignificant 1,755kg.

All told the electric concept managed a highly impressive 7.5mi/kWh, topping the 7.1mi/kWh it registered the first time around. No doubt the warmer temperatures helped on this occasion though.

Arriving at Silverstone with a bit of charge left, the EQXX was then handed over to Formula E driver Nick de Vries, who promptly added 11 (not very gentle) laps to reach the car’s final total.

It’s now been charged up again and sent to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where some quick arithmetic indicates it could do… 646 runs up the hillclimb before it needed a pit-stop.
