This is Formula E's new Santiago street circuit

The Chilean capital will host electric motorsport again – on a very strange-looking course

Published: 09 Oct 2018

The third round of the 2018/19 season of Formula E will grace the streets of the Chilean capital, Santiago. Above, you can see the circuit map itself. Hmm. Any chance it could’ve graced a few more streets, FIA?

This has to be one of the most bizarre racetrack layouts of recent years. After a short loop out of the pit straight, the circuit is dominated by one giant constant-radius turn only broken by a mini-roundabout of a hairpin halfway along. It’s as though the organisers watched Le Mans, observed the Mulsanne Straight with its speed-arresting chicanes and tried to apply the same idea to an actual capital city.

Then, ready for the track to turn back onto the start/finish straight, someone realised, to their horror, that the lap wasn’t really long enough. Luckily, they hit on the idea of heading halfway up the straight, doing a U-turn, going back on itself, and then finally turning to head past the garages. It’s not the most inspiring of layouts, is it?

It’ll host the new generation of sharp-looking Formula E racecars, which develop 335bhp during qualifying, 296bhp during the main event (before FanBoost for the popular guys) and can last an entire race without running out battery. So no car-swaps this season, viewers.

Will you be watching? Or does Formula E need circuits that look as interesting as the new cars?
