Ford has built an all-electric Mustang with 1,800bhp

Remember the all-electric Ford Mustang? No, not the crossovered Mach-E. We’re talking about the frankly ridiculous Cobra Jet 1400 that was unveiled in 2020 and a year later set a world record for full-bodied electric vehicles over the quarter-mile.

If you need a refresh on the numbers, that car had 1,400bhp (hence the name) and ran the quarter-mile in 8.128 seconds at 171.97mph. Yikes. Clearly someone at Ford Performance has a ‘bigger is always better’ policy when it comes to power figures though, because that car has now evolved into the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800.

First, the name. Super Cobra Jet was first used on the 1969 model year Mustangs to mark a further upgrade on the standard Cobra Jet package. And yes, the 1800 part does mean that this car - complete with its previous gen Mustang bodywork - now has 1,800bhp.

All of that power is sent to the rear wheels too, although we’re told that there’s an MLe Racecars-revised rear end with new suspension and larger Mickey Thompson drag radials to get the extra 400bhp down.

There’s also “a new data acquisition system, dash and power distribution system” that Ford Performance has designed in-house, as well as new lighter batteries and a new transmission.

“Our changes have made significant improvements to the car, including removing hundreds of pounds in weight and increasing horsepower to 1800,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports.

“Drag racing remains a key proving ground for our products and technology, and we’re excited to not only try to best our own record in the quarter-mile, but to further showcase ongoing development we continue to make across the entire electric vehicle landscape.”

So yes, the plan is to try and beat the Cobra Jet 1400’s quarter-mile time, but Ford also has its sights set on the ‘fastest electric vehicle 0-60 mph’ and ‘fastest two-wheel drive electric vehicle 0-60mph’ records too. We’ll see whether it’s successful at an as-yet-unspecified NHRA event later this season, with the car’s test driver and MLe Racecar’s cofounder Pat McCue set to be in the hot seat.
