This Precision Concept signals the future of Acura

Lovely concept unveiled in Detroit points towards future design theme

Published: 13 Jan 2016

It’s a bit of a coupe meltdown at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show this year, featuring two-door swoopers from Lexus, Buick, Infiniti and the rest. But one that’s caught our eye is this Acura Precision Concept. Not because it’s real  - this is pure vapourware - but because of what it signals for the future of Honda’s American premium arm.

Apparently the Precision Concept was developed by Acura’s California design centre to embody the brand’s DNA of ‘Precision Crafted Performance’ and Dave Marek, Acura global creative director was heard to comment that “the Acura Precision Concept is more than simply a concept vehicle, it is a design study model that literally will shape the direction of all future Acura products around our Precision Crafted Performance DNA”.

Which leads us to believe that the the over use of the word ‘precision’ can eventually lead to it becoming entirely meaningless. But we’ll probably see the diamond pentagon grille on a few things eventually.

It also features a design theme entitled - somewhat self-importantly - “quantum continuum’ where bits of the outside morph seamlessly into bits of the inside, but apart from the terribly pretentious name, we actually think it looks pretty good.

It’s also got a really very cool ‘digital human-machine interface’ (HMI), where an ultra-wide, curved center screen is operated by a floating touch pad suspended on a cantilevered center stack. Upon entry, the system scans each occupant and selects personalised features and functions, including maps, audio and custom vehicle performance settings.

We can but hope, eh?
