Yours for £100k: Lamborghini’s original SUV is up for auction
This is a white, low-mileage, fully serviced LM002, and you need it in your life immediately
This is a Lamborghini LM002. It is white. It is coming up for auction later this month, and is billed by the auctioneers as an SUV “for the man who has everything.”
Sounds like a tag line for an aftershave, no? But perhaps justified in this case. It’s a Lamborghini SUV: the original ‘Rambo Lambo’ military-spec SUV, built in the 1980s and packing weapons-grade firepower and kerbside appeal.
Underneath, it’s got four-wheel-drive, independent suspension, a five-speed manual gearbox and a socking great 5.1-litre V12 producing 444 horsepowers.
Amusingly there’s a 76-gallon fuel tank on board, feeding that monster V12 with sufficient petrol to allow the LM002 to attain a 0-62mph time of just 7.7 seconds. Which is probably one of the more astonishing feats in physics, when you factor in the LM’s 2.6-tonne kerbweight.
More amusingly, however, is the fact that the LM will officially achieve a heady 8mpg. Yes, that’s not a typo… eight. And that's if you're driving carefully. You'll achieve much, much less if you utilise all those horsepowers while evading light gunfire.
Still, as we said, who cares? It’s a Lamborghini SUV. This one was an original US-delivered model, completed on 17 March 1988, and was one of five LM002s to arrive on US soil on the same day. It’s white, gets a black leather interior, and has covered just 32,000 miles from new.
Don't forget Lamborghini recently announced that it will build a brand new SUV, but for anywhere between the $140,000 and $180,000 estimated sale price, you could get yourself the original Lambo. And one of the boss’s favourites, too.
Yes, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann once told TopGear.com that his personal favourite Lambo was the LM002, of which the company only ever built 301.
“In our DNA there is not only super sports cars, we have other things,” he said. “Yes, the Miura is the car that absolutely made the difference for Lamborghini, but I personally like the LM.”
Want it? Of course you do. It’s being offered up in RM Sotheby’s 25 July Motor City sale. Get down there.
