This is probably the coolest way to enjoy your old Maserati

This classic car concours event in Switzerland takes place on a frozen lake

Published: 01 Mar 2022

It’s that time of year again where people of means chase snow across the slopes of Europe, enjoying the finest hospitality that the Alps has to offer. Skiing is exhausting, though, so the best thing is to hit the piste in a nice car.

Which is exactly what Maserati has been up to this last weekend at ICE St Moritz, a concours event (the name stands for International Concours of Elegance… clever, eh?) set on a frozen lake. In case you were worried about driving your vintage Italian sports car on an actual lake, the event can’t take place until local experts have checked the ice is 27cm thick and crash tests are carried out with a 7,700kg weight.

Among the cars that Maserati took along were the latest MC20, an MC12, a couple of Levante SUVs (boo), an A6GCS-53 Berlinetta Pininfarina and a 3500 GT Vignale Coupé, as well as a 1939 4CL racing car. It wasn’t all skittering about on ice though, Maserati did actually come away with a class win, the 4CL taking the trophy for the ‘Vintage Grand Prix’ category.

St Moritz sits at 1,800 metres above sea level in the Engadine region of Switzerland and hosted the Winter Olympics in 1948. Fun facts. ICE St Moritz first began in 1985 and enjoys the patronage of motoring luminaries – Giorgetto Giugiaro himself is honorary chairman of the judging panel.

Would you enjoy chucking a priceless classic around on 27cm of ice? Doesn't look like there's too much to hit, apart from someone else's priceless classic, of course.
