This is an Aston Martin-engined Volvo

Published: 15 Sep 2011

This is a Volvo P1800. You may remember it from The Saint, where our favourite wobbly-eyebrowed Knight of the Realm, Sir Roger Moore, drove it. Lots.

But this is no ordinary Volvo P1800. It is a Volvo P1800 with an engine from Aston Martin. Built in 1961, the cool Swede was packed off to Aston Martin's factory and fitted with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder prototype engine, for test purposes.

But while the Aston-engined model never saw a fully-fledged production run, this little mule, featuring that bonnet bulge to signify its different powerplant underneath, survived and is currently owned and run by a Mr Beat Roos of Roos Engineering in Switzerland.

What did see a production run of course, was the 100bhp 1.8-litre and 120bhp 2.0-litre variants, and P1800 fact fans will no doubt recall the five P1800s supplied to the producers of Moore's pre-Bond smash, The Saint. Of the five, one was chopped up to allow better interior shots, while the fifth became Sir Roger's personal car. How's that for a celebrity endorsement?

We're showing you this because a) it's quite cool, and b) it's not the Frankfurt motor show. Regale us below with other cool match-ups with classic 60s cars you'd like to see and win a fantastic prize*.
