Triumph reveals two new small capacity motorbikes on the way
The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are new retro-themed single-cylinder models arriving in 2024
Venerable British motorbike maker Triumph has announced two new models that will go on sale in 2024 – the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, retro-themed models biased around road cruising and a bit of off-road fun respectively. The small capacity bikes are intended to be more approachable and more affordable for all riders, says the firm.
The two models will be new entries in the company line-up, powered by a brand new engine that Triumph calls the TR series. It's a liquid cooled, 398cc 1cyl motor producing a heady 39bhp and 28lb ft of torque and a distinctive exhaust note according to Triumph. That's also a decent slug of power on offer when you consider both bikes weigh less than 180kg plus whatever bag of pies sits on top.
The Speed 400 sits on lightweight 17in wheels and is designed for a more comfortable drive, Triumph says the bike is designed to inspire confidence “for riders of all sizes and skill levels”. So that’s good to know – it won’t try and kill you. The Scrambler 400 X has suspension designed for off-roading and larger 19in wheels, as well as a more upright riding position.
Both bikes will come with traction control and ABS to help you out in sticky situations. Interestingly they also both have by wire throttle controls, which means there’s no mechanical link between your right hand and the engine. Triumph says it improves safety, though, and who are we to disagree?
The instrument panel mixes a bit of old and new, with an analogue speedo and digital display for other useful information (such as which of the six gears you’re currently in) and there’s even a nifty USB-C plug for charging up your sundries – phone, portable sat nav, travel kettle, that sort of thing.
Both bikes will be available to order towards the end of the year, with deliveries in the UK starting in 2024. Triumph says there will be a full range of exorbitantly priced (our words) accessories on sale to personalise your ride. Prices for the bikes and all the extra bits will be confirmed closer to then.
