This is an Austin Healey Sprite GT3 car

A designer has a go at rendering the classic Frogeye as a wild racer. Like it?

Published: 21 Dec 2018

We’re fond of a futuristic render here at TopGear.com, but we’re rather used to them being a glance at potential new Nissan GT-Rs and the like.

Not this one. The classic Austin Healey Sprite – more affectionately known as the Frogeye – has been reimagined in the futuristic retro way that’s all the rage right now.

It’s the work of designer Arthur Springthorpe, who’s not only penned a road going version, but a GT3 racer too. Because why not?

He’s designed the modern-day Frogeye to sit upon a Mazda MX-5 platform, 1) because it allows it to be lightweight and rear-driven and 2) it’s worked so well for Fiat with its new-age 124 Spider.

While the road car goes for a classic racing green hue and relatively subtle styling, the GT3 is considerably more dramatic, with dive planes and diffusers aplenty. It’s wild.

What do you think? Are classic British sports cars something that need more future-retro treatment?
