Struggling for a signal in our VW Touareg
Don't know about you, but I haven’t used a built-in satnav in any car for several years, simply because the Waze app on my iPhone is so darned good. With 130 million monthly users, the real-time traffic data and route advice is extraordinary – I’ve come to rely on it more than any car’s own system. Trouble is, it simply doesn’t work in my Touareg – all I get is a “GPS unavailable” message.
My colleague Ollie Marriage tells me he has the same issue in his Bentley Continental GT (I know, first-world problems and all that…). We reckon that cars like ours are so well insulated these days that they play havoc with the GPS and phone signal. Anyhow, it’s not a big issue as the Touareg’s own system is probably the best I’ve experienced. It normally gives similar route advice to Waze, it’s simple and instinctive to use and that huge 13-inch screen is superb – particularly when it’s set to use satellite images rather than regular 2D mapping. So, perhaps not such an issue after all.
