Life with a Mazda CX-60: time to talk tow bars!

My name is Andy Franklin and I’m addicted to tow bars. Yes, after my recent success of using the tow bar on the Mazda to pull a car, I’ve found two further reasons that they are a must have on any family car.

I got the message early on a Saturday morning from my wife, the type of message husbands dread. “Darling, I’ve bought something from Facebook market… a sofa bed, so can you go and collect it?”

Now for those of you that don’t know my wife, she’s useless with measurements and freely admits it. Those blinds in our house that don’t quite fit to the bottom of the windowsill still haunt me today. So, when she said she’s got the measurements and “thinks” it will fit in my car my heart sank. A quick measure of the car and... it looked like it might fit, just!

Off I went to collect yet another ‘bargain of the year’. Back seats folded down, front seats moved as far forward as possible, face slammed against the dash. The Facebook seller and I gently squeezed the sofa and - hurrah! - it fit, with only one problem. I couldn’t quite shut the boot.

Scratching my head on how I’m going to keep the boot down and not re-enact a modern day Only Fools and Horses episode with the sofa sliding all the way out while I drove five minutes round the corner, it dawned on me. The tow bar is my saviour. Strapping the sofa down inside and then using the towbar and the rear windscreen point to tie the boot down. Genius.

At this point, it's necessary to show huge respect for the Mazda - an entire sofa fitting in the car.

The second important reason to have a tow bar: bikes. You can strap a three bike rack on which is perfect for the go-jetter and perfect for taking your kids’ bikes to the local new pump track. But there’s a downside - you can’t open the boot and while I’m pretty sure the CX-60 isn’t alone in this, a boot hatch makes perfect sense and perfect sense on this car. Mazda are you listening?
