Driving

What is it like to drive?

Performance of the all-turbo engine range is torque-laden and easy: they’re all satisfying to drive because they make such light work of what is a reasonably heavy bodyshell. Don’t go looking in the hot ones for fruity sound effects though, for they’re oddly anodyne and the background wind noise drowns any fizz out at speed anyway.

There’s little scuttle shake, always a bane of convertibles and part of the reason why the Golf Cab handles with such reassurance. It’s also why the open-top Golf weighs 140kg more than the hatch, mind, but this doesn’t seem to upset it on the road: The GTI in particular is an involving, communicative car – surprisingly so for a convertible – which also remains comfortable during a cruise.
